Watch: Liam Delap with ‘miss of season’ as he fails to score from 3 yards

Liam Delap squandered a brilliant opportunity to score after firing the ball directly at goalkeeper Walter Benitez from just three yards out.

The Nottingham Forest forward featured as his team faced Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

Oliver Glasner‘s side made an excellent start against his former club, with Dan Ndoye finding the net just three minutes into the game.

Forest should have doubled their advantage shortly after the half-hour mark, but Delap failed to take advantage of a golden opportunity.

Benitez was forced into action by a looping long-range attempt from Morgan Gibbs-White.

The ball struck the crossbar and dropped perfectly into Delap’s path.

However, rather than finding the back of the net, the former Chelsea striker smashed his effort straight into the goalkeeper’s face, wasting a glorious chance to score.

Supporters were left stunned by the unbelievable miss.

One fan wrote on X: “That’s the miss of the season by Delap. It was nearly impossible to miss it.”

Another commented: “So wasteful of him”.

A third joked: “Lmaoo now I see why Chelsea sold Delap.”

Another supporter added: “can we send delap back to chelsea? refund please.”

Delap missed another opportunity in the 40th minute when he sent a free header wide from approximately eight yards out.

His wasted chances soon came back to haunt him as Crystal Palace mounted a comeback.

Daichi Kamada restored parity for the Eagles roughly a minute later before Jefferson Lerma headed Palace into the lead just before half-time.

Delap managed only two goals in 41 appearances for Chelsea last season before completing a £50million move to Nottingham Forest.

He had scored once in his first four appearances for Forest before the clash against Palace.
