WATCH: Moment Man Utd fans hurl abuse at Bruno Fernandes after Carrick’s emotional exit down tunnel

Manchester United supporters delivered a fierce criticism of Bruno Fernandes as the captain made his way off the pitch after a miserable 90 minutes.

The Red Devils endured a painful 3-0 home defeat against Bournemouth, with an emotional Michael Carrick applauding the fans who remained in the stadium until the end.

United were thoroughly beaten after Rayan broke the deadlock in the first half before Marcus Tavernier extended Bournemouth’s advantage and Evanilson wrapped up the victory after the interval.

The disappointing result left United with only one victory from their opening eight league matches, leaving them languishing in 16th place in the table.

As Carrick made his way towards the tunnel, the supporters’ chants of “Carrick” quickly gave way to boos directed at the players, including Fernandes, who followed behind the manager.

The United captain was surprisingly left out of the starting lineup for the weekend encounter, with Joshua Zirkzee and Shea Lacey instead chosen as late substitutes.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Carrick explained his decisions, saying: “There’s always times when you’re trying to make decisions that are to change the course of play and make a difference but those are the decisions we made today.”

Discussing the decision to leave the Portuguese midfielder on the bench, Jamie Carragher said: “I don’t think he was ever going to bring him on.

“I think it was a deliberate decision to leave him on the bench and almost try to embarrass him a little bit in front of the supporters.”

Fernandes’ omission comes after the midfielder, who won both of the club’s Player of the Year awards last season, criticised Carrick’s tactical approach following United’s humiliating 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como.
