Violent scenes broke out outside the Estadio Azteca on Thursday evening, casting a shadow over the opening match of the 2026 World Cup in Mexico City.
Security forces fired tear gas after being targeted with thrown objects, taking attention away from co-hosts Mexico’s victory on the field as longstanding political frustrations spilled into the tournament’s security zone.

Around 10 minutes before kick-off, approximately 2,000 protesters gathered near the stadium to express outrage over thousands of unresolved disappearance cases nationwide.
Tensions quickly escalated when demonstrators tried to breach the inner perimeter, damaging a parked truck during the unrest.
A force of 300 security officers was deployed to push back the crowd and re-establish control around the venue.

The disorder outside was a sharp contrast to the festive mood enjoyed by supporters inside the stadium.
Underscoring the severity of the situation as authorities struggled to regain order, reports from talkSPORT noted that the confrontation intensified when activists hurled flares and rocks at police lines, prompting riot units to respond and use tear gas to disperse the crowd.
The historic stadium occupies a special place in football history as the only venue to stage matches at three different World Cups, including the finals in 1970 and 1986.
Although five tournament matches are scheduled to be played there, the opening fixture was unfortunately overshadowed by deep-rooted domestic concerns.
On the field, Javier Aguirre’s side recorded a 2-0 victory over South Africa, who were reduced to nine players after Yaya Sithole and Themba Zwane received red cards.
The clash between Mexico and South Africa produced a new World Cup record after witnessing three consecutive red cards.
South Africa’s Sphephelo Sithole and Themba Zwane were sent off for separate incidents involving a foul and violent conduct, while Mexico captain César Montes was dismissed during stoppage time.
Despite the disciplinary drama, the hosts claimed a 2-0 win in the heated Group A encounter.
Mexico will now have to deal with the consequences of a fiery contest that also resulted in defender Cesar Montes being shown a red card in added time, making him unavailable for their next Group A match.
The squad heads to Guadalajara for what is expected to be a much tougher tactical challenge later this week. El Tri will need to remain focused despite possible distractions as they get ready to take on an organised South Korea side.
