Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo found himself stepping in to challenge US police officers during Ecuador’s 3-0 friendly victory over Guatemala on Sunday evening.
With one of the youngest squads set to compete at this year’s tournament, the South American side head into the competition on the back of an impressive unbeaten run stretching 19 matches.

Yet, despite enjoying a largely trouble-free build-up on the field, an incident during their final preparatory fixture before next week’s Group E clash against Ivory Coast has once again raised questions about police behaviour in the host country.
Ecuador cruised to a comfortable triumph at Ohio Stadium, with Jordy Caicedo, Nilson Angulo, and Pervis Estupinan all finding the back of the net.
Despite the convincing result, much of the attention after the match centred on a controversial moment involving Premier League star Moises Caicedo, who stepped in after police officers appeared to act aggressively towards a pitch invader.

As the game neared its conclusion, a Guatemala supporter entered the field of play, prompting US police to detain him using what many perceived as excessive force, with several officers bringing him to the ground.
Caicedo moved quickly to shield the supporter and was then seen voicing his objections to the officers, confronting them over what he viewed as an unnecessarily forceful response. Watch the incident below:
The Chelsea midfielder has since received widespread praise across social media platforms, while spectators inside the stadium appeared to express their disapproval of the police response, with boos clearly audible in footage of the incident.
At the time of writing, no official statement has been issued regarding the matter.
The scenes on Sunday seemed to reflect concerns many travelling fans expressed when the United States was awarded hosting rights for the tournament.
Although ICE’s widely reported activities and Donald Trump’s strict immigration stance have attracted considerable attention, they have also highlighted broader concerns facing supporters planning to travel to the country.
Beyond those issues, the United States’ longstanding struggle with mass shootings continues to be viewed as a major safety concern.
On the same day as Ecuador’s final warm-up fixture, a shooting close to England’s planned training base in Kansas City left nine people injured, adding further weight to security concerns surrounding the tournament.
