Getafe have been dealt a major setback just days before the new Spanish league season gets underway.
Medical examinations have confirmed a serious injury suffered by forward Christantus Uche during the friendly against Monaco, with the Nigerian now set to undergo surgery that is expected to rule him out for the entire 2026-2027 campaign.

According to the Spanish newspaper “AS”, an MRI scan carried out the day after the game revealed multiple tears in Uche’s right knee, with damage affecting both the ligaments and menisci.
The severity of the injury means the 21-year-old will need an operation in the coming days, followed by an extended rehabilitation and recovery process.
Uche suffered the injury during the closing stages at the Stade Louis II as Getafe searched for an equaliser after going behind.

The Nigerian picked up the ball on the left flank and attempted to launch a late attack, only for French defender Christian Mawissa to make a strong challenge to halt his progress.
The tackle caused Uche’s right leg to twist awkwardly, immediately raising concerns among the players, coaching staff and medical teams from both sides.
The forward was unable to continue and was quickly attended to by Getafe’s medical personnel before being carried from the field on a stretcher.
Getafe’s initial diagnosis after the match suggested that Uche had suffered only a “bruise”. However, further examinations delivered far more worrying news, confirming significant damage to several structures within his knee.
As a result, Uche is expected to miss the entire 2026-2027 season, creating a huge setback for both the player and the club at a particularly unfortunate stage.
The forward had been anticipating the new campaign as an important opportunity in his development at the Madrid-based club after returning from his loan spell at the end of last season.
Getafe had viewed Uche as an important part of their plans for the upcoming season, particularly with the club preparing to compete in the UEFA Europa Conference League.
His injury has now forced the club to rethink those plans, leaving the coaching staff with an early problem just a week before the start of the Spanish league campaign.
The setback is not only physical. According to “AS”, Uche has also been left struggling emotionally after discovering the seriousness of his injury, with the report stating that the Nigerian was deeply shocked by the news that he would be facing such a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
The forward now begins a demanding period of treatment and rehabilitation.
His recovery will start with surgery before progressing into an extended fitness programme, all coming at a time when Uche had been preparing to begin the season with Getafe and make his mark in European competition.
