Watch: Moment Leny Yoro was controversially sent off vs Atletico Madrid

Leny Yoro was shown a red card following a dramatic VAR review during Manchester United’s Champions League encounter with Atletico Madrid.

The French centre-back was dismissed in the 73rd minute after a challenge on Jonathan David, leaving United to suffer a 2-0 loss in their second Champions League phase match.

Yoro attempted to win the ball from the Atletico forward, who went crashing to the ground after the two players made contact.

The loose ball fell to former Fulham attacker Ademola Lookman, but his shot was kept out by United goalkeeper Senne Lammens.

Referee Glenn Nyberg initially awarded Manchester United a free-kick after David was penalised for handball.

However, the official was later instructed to consult the pitchside monitor to take another look at Yoro’s challenge.

After reviewing the footage, Nyberg changed his decision and showed Yoro a straight red card, reducing United to ten players.

The dismissal sparked controversy, as Yoro and David appeared to get their legs tangled during the challenge, leaving room for the incident to be interpreted as an accidental collision.

The decision dealt another major blow to Michael Carrick’s struggling team, who were already 1-0 behind in Madrid.

Pablo Barrios had given the hosts an early advantage, finding the net within the opening minute of the contest.

United’s situation deteriorated further after Yoro’s dismissal, with Lookman capitalising on a rebound to score Atletico’s second goal.

The defeat leaves Carrick with an even bigger challenge as he attempts to revive his side’s fortunes, with United’s campaign continuing to unravel.

They have now gone five games without a win, with more than a month having passed since their previous victory against Sabah in the Champions League.
