WATCH: Alternate angle shows brutal way Emi Martinez got injured before being stretchered off

Emiliano Martinez endured a painful departure from Hill Dickinson Stadium during Chelsea’s 2-0 victory over Everton in their 2026/27 Premier League encounter.

The Argentine goalkeeper was stretchered off in the 75th minute after suffering what appeared to be a serious injury during a collision with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite.

Moments before being substituted, Martinez came out to claim a cross into the penalty area but collided with the Toffees centre-back in the process.

However, it was the goalkeeper who appeared to suffer the more concerning injury. Immediately after the incident, the full extent of the damage was unclear, leaving many unsure about what had happened to him.

It soon became evident that Martinez had sustained a head injury after his head made contact with Branthwaite during the collision.

An alternative angle captured in a photograph from the match provides a clearer view of the frightening impact the Argentine suffered against Everton.

The image shows Martinez’s face making direct contact with the back of the English defender’s head. The force of the collision appeared to leave the goalkeeper badly shaken, with a possible jaw injury among the concerns.

Chelsea were subsequently forced to withdraw him from the game, handing Mike Penders his Premier League debut.

Martinez looked close to tears as medical staff carried him off the pitch. However, Everton supporters drew criticism for their behaviour after booing the goalkeeper as he was taken away for treatment.

Following the match, Xabi Alonso was unable to provide a conclusive update on Martinez’s condition, stating: “As far as I know he left the stadium conscious. Right now he is at the hospital doing precautionary tests, so let’s see, but this is what I know so far.”
