Solskjaer close to Man Utd return after backing from key players

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is reportedly on the verge of making a dramatic comeback to Manchester United.

The former Red Devils striker and manager is said to be deep in discussions to take over as United’s interim head coach until the season concludes.

According to reports, several senior players, most notably Bruno Fernandes and Harry Maguire—are backing Solskjaer’s potential return.

Club icons like Rio Ferdinand and Gary Neville are also believed to be in support of their former teammate stepping back in.

The Norwegian is hopeful that a strong showing in the interim role could lead to a permanent appointment.

Alongside Solskjaer, names like Michael Carrick and Ruud van Nistelrooy have also been approached about the temporary position.

While sources inside the club maintain that multiple names are being considered, talkSPORT claims Solskjaer is currently the leading candidate.

Darren Fletcher is holding the interim position for now, but the club is actively seeking someone to guide the team through the rest of the campaign.

Solskjaer made himself available on Monday, and Carrick another former United midfielder is also open to the opportunity.

Carrick previously stepped in as caretaker after Solskjaer’s dismissal in 2018 before taking over at Middlesbrough. Both men have been contacted as United search for a short-term replacement for Ruben Amorim.

However, talkSPORT suggests the club is leaning toward bringing back the Norwegian, who first took over after Jose Mourinho was let go in December 2018.

The treble hero was given the job permanently before the end of the 2018/19 season but was dismissed in November 2021 after an emotional farewell interview.

Fletcher is expected to lead the team against Burnley at Turf Moor on Wednesday.

He’ll be joined on the touchline by Jonny Evans, another former United player, and is also being considered to stay in the role until season’s end.

It’s still unclear who will manage the side for the upcoming FA Cup clash with Brighton on Sunday.

If Fletcher handles that match, then Solskjaer’s first game back at Old Trafford could be the derby against Manchester City on January 17.

Amorim was dismissed on Monday, less than a day after publicly criticizing the club’s leadership during a press conference.

The board is taking its time with the decision, believing that waiting until summer could open up more long-term options.

Potential full-time candidates include Oliver Glasner, Thomas Tuchel, Mauricio Pochettino, and Roberto De Zerbi.

Solskjaer’s journey with United began in 1996 when he signed from Molde.

Over 11 years at Old Trafford, the Baby Faced Assassin collected numerous trophies, including six Premier League titles and a Champions League.

His most iconic moment came in 1999 when he scored the dramatic winner in stoppage time against Bayern Munich to complete the treble.

As noted earlier, Solskjaer returned in December 2018 after Mourinho’s exit and earned the permanent role following a strong run of results.

That unforgettable goal cemented Solskjaer’s legacy at the club.

In his first full season as manager, he overcame several rough patches and secured Champions League qualification.

United finished second in the 2020/21 campaign, but a poor start to the next season led to his dismissal after a 4-1 loss to Watford.
