Sergio Ramos in key talks to buy big club as shock takeover bid emerges

Former Real Madrid and Spain player Sergio Ramos is involved in takeover discussions regarding a La Liga team, according to reports.

Ramos is recognised as one of the best defenders of the past two decades, after 16 years at Real Madrid.

On international level, the 39-year-old earned 180 caps for Spain and formed part of the teams that won three international trophies which includes Euro 2008, the 2010 World Cup, and Euro 2012.

Now, the central defender appears to want to remain involved with the game, having left Mexican club Monterrey last month.

Ramos did not renew his contract with the Liga MX side, who he joined in February, and has been linked with several European sides – including a shock move to Premier League giants Manchester United.

However, a report from Football Espana claims Ramos is “involved in takeover talks” with former team Sevilla.

He has enjoyed two spells with the Andalusian outfit, having also spent the 2023/24 seqson with the team before his move to Monterrey.

Diario AS claim a due diligence process had led potential American investors, Antonio Lappi and Fede Quintero, to lower their offer, which could facilitate Ramos’ investment.

The Spanish outlet reported Ramos has “initiated preliminary contacts” to learn about the situation ahead of becoming an investor.

Sevilla’s finances have deterred the American investors who at first offered €3,400 per share but are now offering €2,700, as per AS.

Ramos would likely be a minority investor and leads a group who have made an offer to shareholders, which is reported to be the highest made so far.

Sevilla are synonymous with the Europa League, having won the competition a whooping seven times, including three triumphs in a row between 2014 and 2016.

But in recent years, the Spanish team have struggled to keep pace with Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid, as well as teams such as rivals Real Betis, Athletic Club and Villarreal.

In 2024/25, Sevilla finished 17th in the league and narrowly escaped relegation while also encountering financial issues.

Halfway through the current season, the Spanish side, managed by Matías Almeyda, are tenth in La Liga but remain five points above the relegation zone.
