Second Liverpool player to leave in January as Arne Slot given nightmare scenario

Liverpool boss Arne Slot could soon find himself in a tricky situation after reports suggested Serie A giants AC Milan are plotting a ‘last-minute’ move for one of his squad members.

Having failed to land primary summer target Marc Guehi, Liverpool are currently light on options at centre-back.

That shortage was highlighted on Saturday when Joe Gomez picked up an injury during the 3-2 loss to Bournemouth, forcing Slot to deploy midfielder Wataru Endo in central defence alongside Virgil van Dijk.

Ibrahima Konate was absent for family-related reasons, while teenage defender Giovanni Leoni, signed from Parma in the summer, is facing a year on the sidelines after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament tear in September. ..[read more]

While the full severity of Gomez’s injury is still unclear, it has further underlined Liverpool’s growing concerns over their defensive depth.

As a result, the Reds may be forced into swift action in the transfer market. It has now been reported that AC Milan are eager to finalise a deal for Joe Gomez before the January transfer window closes.

Milan sporting director Igli Tare is said to be pushing for a last-minute move for Gomez, with Italian outlet CalcioMercato claiming the 28-year-old has already ‘received approval’ from head coach Massimiliano Allegri.

Van Dijk reacts amid transfer speculation
Earlier this week, reports revealed that Tottenham had initiated discussions with Liverpool over a potential move for Andy Robertson, whose contract expires at the end of the campaign.

Talks between the clubs and the player are believed to be ‘advancing’, according to The Athletic.

The 31-year-old featured regularly under Arne Slot during last season’s title-winning campaign but has managed just four Premier League starts this term following the signing of Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth.

Addressing the possibility of his teammate departing in January, Van Dijk did not hide his stance.

“He’s my vice-captain,” Van Dijk said after the Bournemouth match. “Robbo is a very important member of our team and I want him to stay but whatever happens, let’s see.”
