Real Madrid ‘submit £87m bid’ for Premier League star hours after Benfica defeat

Real Madrid have reportedly set their sights on a Premier League standout following their disappointing loss to Benfica.

The Spanish giants failed to secure automatic qualification for the Champions League last 16 after being stunned by Jose Mourinho’s Benfica on their travels.

Kylian Mbappe fired Alvaro Arbeloa’s team ahead on the half-hour mark, but Andreas Schjelderup restored parity just six minutes later.

Benfica then took the advantage just before the break as Vangelis Pavlidis converted from the penalty spot, before Schjelderup struck again 15 minutes into the second half to extend the hosts’ lead.

Mbappe grabbed his second of the night shortly afterwards, though it proved insufficient to ignite a comeback as the contest spiralled into late drama.

Raul Asencio and Rodrygo were both dismissed in the closing stages, before goalkeeper Antanoliy Trubin sensationally headed in during the 98th minute to seal Benfica’s progression to the play-offs.

The loss means Madrid must now contest two additional matches to reach the last 16 and will be drawn against either Bodo/Glimt or Benfica once again in the next phase.

According to reports, the defeat has prompted urgent action in the transfer market, with club president Florentino Perez keen to strengthen the defensive unit.

Madrid are said to be ‘desperate’ to add leadership at the back, a situation that has reportedly led them to submit an £87m bid for Tottenham defender Cristian Romero, as per Fichajes.

The Argentina international is considered an ideal fit for Madrid’s squad, although Tottenham’s willingness to part with such a key figure so late in the winter window remains uncertain.

Even so, the report claims Madrid believe Romero’s interest in a move to the Bernabeu could play a decisive role in Perez striking a deal with the North London club.

Romero committed his long-term future to Spurs in August by signing a contract that runs until 2029, leaving Thomas Frank under no obligation to sell the captain he personally appointed.

The defender had previously been strongly linked with Atletico Madrid but ultimately chose to remain at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Following his contract extension, Romero said: “I’m very happy here in the club. For me, this club is the best in the world.

“The last two weeks, first becoming captain and now signing the contract with the club. For me, it’s a fantastic decision

“My message to the fans is thank you for your amazing support every day and every match. For me, and it’s important also for the team.”
